Tips for delivering successful webcasts with an increased number of remote viewers

Many businesses that have taken measures to reduce the spread of the CONVID-19 virus are faced with the challenge of communicating to an increased number of employees now working remotely. In order to handle this sudden increase in the number of remote viewers of live video communication and uphold a high quality of experience, it is essential to reduce the load on the corporate network. There are two ways of addressing this challenge:

  • Reduce load on the VPN network
  • Reduce load on Internet connections and Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Reduce load on the VPN network

The first thing to do is request that your employees turn off VPN during webcasts. This is a behavior change needed from your employees and does not require any configuration. By doing this the Hive ECDN solution will be able to efficiently peer by utilizing the public Internet. The result is first and foremost that the VPN network is not overloaded but also that the load on the CDN is reduced.

Reduce load on Internet connections and CDN

If turning off the VPN during webcasts is not a viable option and you have a Hive agent deployment, setting up VPN Split Tunneling is an alternative. This is how you do it in two steps:

  1. Set up VPN Split Tunneling for all CDN domains. This helps to decrease the burden on the VPN network thus preventing overload and making available capacity needed for other applications.
  2. Set up VPN Split Tunneling for hivestreaming.com. By doing this Hive agents are enabled to peer between each other and not via the VPN network. This decreases the load on the CDN for office users but, depending on the VPN rules, potentially also for the remote users.

And finally…

Regardless of which option you choose to pursue, it is beneficial to use the installed Hive agent. The installed Hive agent has access to low level network information such as network interfaces, private IP et cetera which allows for continuously improved peer-to-peer algorithm decisions.
